Conneticut Lost Two Young Tiger Cubs Last Week – You Can Help

Two of the young boys we lost in Conneticut last week were Tiger Cubs, the first level of Cub Scouts before joining Boy Scouts on the road to Eagle Scout. Chase Kowalski and Benjamin Wheeler of Pack 170 were stopped short of these goals, these life events, by a mad man.

The Connecticut Yankee Council to which they are members started a memorial fund in their name. Please take a moment and donate to this fund by sending a check to ‘Pack 170 Memorial Fund’ C/O Connecticut Yankee Council, PO Box 32, Milford, CT 06461.

After receiving this information via my Council I was saddened. Two Cubs killed by a mad, sad man. This is one vision that remains with me from that awful event last week.

‘What evil can bring a priest to tears? How can a man with God’s faith falter? What evil can do this?’

The other picture I keep remembering is video of a Catholic priest as he began to cry while speaking about his experience counseling a dead boy’s brother. I thought to myself, what evil can bring a priest to tears? How can a man with God’s faith falter? What evil can do this? And then, he has to pick up the pieces and counsel the afflicted to health and clarity.

After taking a deep breath and putting these thoughts away, I went back to focus on my day finishing portraits of Eagle Scouts and College graduates we recently created.

I was interrupted by a phone call. My day was to become more sad.

The father of an Eagle Scout called about his appointment and wanted to know some information about the packages and the processes. He said, “You know, this just isn’t worth a whole lot of money, this is not that big a thing.”

Really, not that big a thing? I was shocked. In a period of 20 minutes I went from mourning two lost scouts who will never have the chance to become an Eagle Scout, to the father who didn’t understand the value of his son’s Eagle achievement. I can only hope this father learns to celebrate his son’s accomplishments in our community, and participation within this community.

I’m proud to say we create portraits of, “America’s Future Leaders” and believe they will ascend to leadership of my country soon. These are Eagle Scouts, Girl Scout Gold Awardees, College, University and Juris Doctorate graduates and the families who nurture them. I’ve seen thousands and thousands of these young Americans striving to make their communities, their businesses and their country a better place to live.

I’m very fortunate to be able to be in this place, and to meet these great young people. I count my blessings.
